As published by JETCAM in “FAQ: What is nesting software,” nesting software takes flat patterns of parts that need to be cut from sheets or rolls, then builds the most efficient “nest” to fit the most parts with the least waste, while also optimizing the cut path and generating NC code for the CNC machine.
It also explains how nesting fits into CAM workflows, including importing CAD geometry (often DXF) and applying cutting logic before generating the machine program. Common time-and-waste reducers include common-line cutting (shared edges between parts), fly cutting for faster hole arrays on lasers, and a mix of automatic nesting plus manual “bump” placement to use leftover space.
