During cold rolling, metal grains elongate along the rolling direction. This makes the material more brittle when stress is applied across the grain (transverse direction), which can result in cracking during bending operations. Traditionally, nesting algorithms have focused solely on maximizing material usage—but this new approach integrates grain orientation, optimizing not just for material efficiency but also structural integrity.
